Highway Authorities & Concessionaires

India's National Highways are primarily managed by NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. Private concessionaires operate specific stretches under BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contracts.

Payment Methods

Accepted Payment

  • FASTag (RFID): Mandatory for all 4-wheelers in India since 2021. Linked to bank account or prepaid wallet. Get 100% off on FASTag lane waiting vs. cash lane double-charge.
  • Cash: Only in the dedicated cash/hybrid lane. Without FASTag you pay double the toll in the FASTag-only lane.
  • UPI / Digital Wallets: Accepted at some modern plazas via QR code.

FASTag Tips

  • Get FASTag from any major bank, NHAI portal, or Amazon/Flipkart
  • Minimum ₹100 balance recommended before long trips
  • Low balance SMS alerts via registered mobile number

Vehicle Categories & Toll Rates

NHAI classifies vehicles into categories based on size and axles. Toll rates are revised annually every April. Cars typically pay the base rate; trucks pay 2–10x depending on axle count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FASTag mandatory in India?

Yes. Since February 2021, FASTag is mandatory for all 4-wheelers in India. Vehicles without FASTag entering a FASTag-designated lane are charged double the toll amount. Only one cash/hybrid lane is available per toll plaza direction for non-FASTag vehicles.

Do toll rates differ by state?

Yes. National Highway tolls are set by NHAI but state highways have their own rates set by State Road Development Corporations (e.g., MSRDC, UPEIDA, TNRDC). Rates also vary by project — BOT projects often charge more than HAM/annuity projects where toll collection goes to the government.

Are there exemptions from paying toll?

Yes. Vehicles exempt from toll include: President/VP/PM convoys, defense vehicles on duty, ambulances, fire trucks, police vehicles, and in some cases, residents within 20 km of a toll plaza (with proof of local residence). Some states also exempt state government vehicles.

What is the GPS-based toll system being rolled out?

The Indian government is gradually introducing GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) based tolling, where charges are deducted based on actual distance travelled — similar to Portugal's free-flow system. This will replace physical toll plazas on major corridors and is expected to be fully implemented by 2027.

Can tourists and foreign visitors pay tolls easily?

Yes. Foreign visitors can pay cash (Indian Rupees) at toll plazas. International credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at most major plazas. For rental cars, ask your rental company if the vehicle has a FASTag — most modern rental fleets in India are FASTag-equipped.
